Population
La Vista's culture of envisioning its future has become a founding trademark for
one of the youngest cities in the state. The city has developed a plan that has
allowed for exponential and planned growth making it also one of the fastest growing
cities in Nebraska.
La Vista is located in eastern Nebraska, in the metro Omaha area and contiguous
to the cities of Omaha, Bellevue, Ralston and Papillion. The City of La Vista is
the youngest City in Sarpy County — incorporated in 1960, when 335 homes were built
with a scenic view of the Big Papio Creek Basin. La Vista was named for its Spanish
translation - The View. Since its incorporation, the City has grown at an amazing
rate as documented with each census:
- 1970 -- 4,858
- 1980 -- 9,588
- 1990 -- 9,850
- 2000 -- 11,699
- 2002 -- 12,960
- 2004 -- 14,685
- 2005 -- 15,692
During the next ten years, the population is expected to double as a result of current
growth and development. Population grew nearly 19% in last decade. Since 1994 the
City's assessed valuation grew 211% and the City has issued building permits totaling
in excess of $456 million in valuation. With this level of growth, the City has
had to look beyond the status quo and develop a vision for the future of the community
and public services.
